Recently, the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) revealed that India will need at least 50,000 company secretaries ( CS) by 2020. So read on to find out how you can take part in this rising growth curve.

A student who would like to join the course after higher secondary examinations has to undergo three stages to pursue the Company Secretary’s Course — A) Foundation Programme; B) Executive Programme; and C) Professional Programme. Those who join the course after passing their graduation have to study two modules — A) Executive Programme; and B) Professional Programme.

The Foundation Programme of Company Secretary is eight months duration can be pursued by 10+ 2 students of Arts, Science or Commerce stream. This does not include students of Fine Arts. The Executive Programme can be pursued by a graduate of any stream except Fine Arts. Meanwhile, the Professional Programme can be pursued only after clearing the Executive Programme of CS Course.

A student has to undergo 15 month training in a company or under a practising Company Secretary after passing the CS Executive Programme or CS Professional Programme. Students who have the required prescribed practical experience can seek partial or total exemption from training. Sponsorship for the training is made by the institute. The companies and the practising Company, Company Secretaries pay a stipend to the student during the training period.

Every student is required to undergo 15 day training in a specialised agency. Students also have to attend a seven- day Student Induction Programme (within six months of registration to Executive Programme), eight- day Executive Development Programme (after Executive Programme), 15 day Management Skills Orientation Programme (after Professional Programme) and 25 hours of Professional Development.

According to data released by ICSI, there has been over 70 per cent growth in student’s enrolment for CS programme in last few years. At present, there are 22,000 CS either working as employee of big industrial houses or practicing independently in the country. So after this course, one thing is for sure — you’ll be in big demand.
